$1 Op-Amp ECG

200908230245.jpg

Sometimes you just want to do a little heart monitoring without going into debt for the rest of your life (yes, that's a not-so-subtle jab at our wonderful healthcare system). When you can't afford the real thing, this $1 home made electrocardiogram will allow you to monitor your heart as you go into cardiac arrest while opening bills from your previous hospital adventures. This is much simpler than our previously covered homemade ecg, and probably about as accurate (read: not very). [via]

Notice: This ECG cost less to make than an artery clogging burger from your local BK. Therefore, we do not recommend making medical decisions based off of the data received from it.

Unclog Your Drain With A 2-Liter Bottle

201012291556.jpg

One way to unclog your drain using a two liter bottle is to fill it with warm water and squeeze the bottle while pointing it down the drain. The pressure will swoosh light debris away. When that doesn't work, get out the scissors and head on over to the Dollar Store Crafts blog for instructions on how to make your own drain snake our of a two liter bottle. Just get ready for a disgusting surprise and the smell of death.

Yet Another Use for Vinegar: Vase Cleaner

I was reading Lifehacker when I came upon this really great tip for yet another use for vinegar from commenter Kevster. My approach to cleaning the surplus of vases in my home will never be the same (or this exciting) again.

use-for-vinegarVincent Ma, flickr

As a DIY editor, I thought I heard every use for vinegar that you could possibly think of. (Smell remover! Fabric softener!) But people always surprise me with their ways to use the stuff. A few months ago, I was eating at a regrettable restaurant in Atlantic City, when the bubble-haired waitress let me in on a tip: If you want to take away the heat from a spicy dish, just add vinegar. This was about the only thing I gained from that trip (the rest I lost at the casino later that night).

Anyway, I came upon this other genius use for vinegar today: Vase cleaner. Just add baking soda to the vase, then pour in the vinegar. Yes, this is also the recipe for a science fair volcano. The baking soda foam will rise, effectively cleaning even the oddest-shaped vases. For more great tips for using vinegar, check out Lifehacker.

Curbspotting: Vintage Lamps

Filed under:

If you saw these vintage lamps on the curb, would you take them home? One talented designer did just that. See how she gave these lamps a decidedly modern update.

vintage-lampsLia Fagan, flickr

I admit to a bias against the vintage lamps I find on the curb, at the flea market or thrift store. It's not that I think they don't have potential, but most of the time I feel like updating the lamp can be more trouble than it's worth. But Lia Fagan of Mod Pieces, a shop specializing in rescuing vintage lamps, is causing me to reconsider my stance. Here's how she transformed the outdated set.

She gave the bases a coat of periwinkle paint, and then covered the shades in an abstract paint-splatter print fabric. It's funny how painting the base in one color actually brings out the sculptural details (like the fern leaves) on the lamp base. To see more of Lia's vintage lamp makeovers, visit the Mod Pieces Flickr page.

Fourth of July Crafts Countdown: Nautical Napkin Rings

Get out your sparklers and strike up the marching band music...it's time for our Fourth of July crafts countdown!

fourth-of-july-craftsMiki Duisterhof, Country Living

Can you guess the secret behind these adorable nautical napkin holders? They're made from a set of white wooden shower curtain rings. Simply draw on the stripes using colored markers, add names using letter stamps and then seal with an acrylic spray. To get that vintage look, sand the rings beforehand.

For more Fourth of July crafts, check out the July/August issue of Country Living, which comes out on June 28th. Since I tend to get my covers confused (ending up with multiple issues of a mag), here's what the cover looks like:
