DIY Lighting: Umbrella Pendant Lamp

Two umbrellas plus a hanging socket make for statement-making DIY lighting in this project from ReadyMade.

Finding the right-sized pendant to fit over your table can be a challenge, especially if you have high ceilings. This DIY lighting project is a great cure for filling in that open space, utilizing the relatively generous domed shape of an umbrella to create a spherical pendant. Plus, the weatherproof material makes the light safe for outdoor use.

Though a clear umbrella affords maximum light, a brightly-patterned model can also be used (or even a pretty parasol). In a nutshell, you'll want to trim off the handle, feed a hanging socket through the top and then connect the two umbrellas with twist-ties. For the complete instructions, visit ReadyMade.

Creating Your Own Geocache

200908230310.jpg

If you've never heard of geocaching, you're in for a treat. Chances are that you have a few geocaches right in your own neighborhood. These mini-treasure boxes can be found with GPS coordinates downloaded from the geocaching website and can be a fun way to get outdoors and try something new. All you need is a GPS - even a capable smartphone will do the trick.

After you've found a few caches, it's a good idea to contribute to the sport by making one of your own. Geoaching.com offers a great tutorial on putting together your first cache and finding a good hiding place for it.

Create Your Own Backyard Water Feature

Whether its a small bubbling stream or a still, placid pond, having water around seems to make people feel more relaxed and comfortable. However, in modern communities, there just isn't much natural water around.

Crafty Memorial Day Countdown: Cocktail Umbrellas

The June issue of mag crush Country Living has a ton of ideas perfect for your Memorial Day celebration. Get a head start on the celebrating by crafting along with us as we go through our favorites.

Today's idea: Lacy cocktail umbrellas.

Perfect for Memorial Day parties and bridal showers alike, these lacy cocktail umbrellas prove that small details can make a huge impact. (See how the lace detailing contrasts the sleek lines of the cooler glasses?) Plus, they're useful for stirring drinks and keeping tabs on guests' glasses.

To make these cocktail umbrellas, first craft a "base" by cutting a 2"-diameter out of card stock. Using a glue stick, paste the circle to the solid center of a 4"-diameter doily. (You can usually find these doilies in your grocery store, near the disposable baking pans.) Next, cut the doily from one edge to the center and bend into a cone, with the card stock circle on the inside; secure with glue. Then, hot glue the tip of a wooden skewer into the cone, creating the umbrella.

Easy, right? To see a nice big photo of the cocktail umbrellas and more crafty ideas, check out the June issue of Country Living. Because I always forget what new magazine issues look like (leading to me buying multiples of an issue), here's the cover shot:

Rebuilding a power window regulator (Gen3 Maxima)

This assembly is not made to be serviceable but a cable jam isn't enough reason for me to buy a new one. So here's how I did it :) First, inspect some irreparable stuff. Regulators are made with plastic pulleys, holders, etc... So they are really vulnerable to damages. As you can see, the regulat...
