So a Chevron rug walks into a bar. He is at once taken by the beauty of Miss Modern Color Palette, who, with her deep navy blues and soothing slate grays, is simply oozing contemporary charm.
Things are really heating up, and before long, a little of that sultry modern lipstick had rubbed off on Chevron's collar. "Hey, ya know, I look pretty snazzy in these here colors. Gimme some more of that suga, mama."
And that, friends, is how the contemporary explosion of sleek patterns, geometrical shapes and repetitions of form snuck right into our hearts and homes -- for the better.
Let's check out a few of these patterns and colors in this week's Contemporary Design Trend Round-Up. Send me a shout if I've missed something!
Modern Color Palettes
We'll start with some modern color examples. This photo collage I made incorporates a few of my all-time fave contemporary colors: pale blue, light gray, tangerine, deep purple, bright white and apple red.
Layering Patterns
The rule is essentially this: stick with your color palette, and you can layer one pattern or texture after the next. For example, I adore designer AB Chao's office/living room above (which Capree turned me on to with this gold nugget of a post), for its intelligent layering of patterns. Not too chaotic, and yet stimulating enough to keep you inspired. That's important, seeing as AB Chao is now a full-time at-home freelancer. You go, girl.
Mix geometrical art on the walls with your chevron pillows, modern Persian-style rug and Santa-Fe-themed sunset oranges and yellows, and you've got a recipe for success.
Hegaxonal Inspiration
A staple of modern design, hexagonal decor will never go out of style.
Chevron Goodness
Who else is going crazy for this trend? It's everywhere, and yet I still can't get enough of it.

Contemporary Wallpaper
Once you've got your palette, you can take it to the floors, fabrics and even walls of your space. Chic contemporary wallpaper adds a level of intrigue to a space that, you've gotta admit, is hard to match with paint.
